WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: inspirational souls

25 Dec

Somewhere between my quick business trip to Barbados with Dj Dummy and returning to the cold of NYC, I got a bit of my mojo back!

As my return to NYC tweet last night stated, I’m back on my grind:

…oddly enough in the process of looking for some info and reading the January 2012 issue of Self magazine, I ran into this video featuring A-trak, Curtis Kulig, Carlos Quirarte.  The video is a piece on people grinding in NYC that went with HBO’s now cancelled show, How to Make it in America (I’m sad about the cancellation, but they needed better writers, and needed to stop showing the obvious and develop the not understood).

As i digress, this is a great piece to get motivated if you lost a little bit of your mojo.

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: style

10 Dec

Style Diary is back! I missed posting the past weeks, so here you go!  I’ve been in work mode, and I haven’t been going out, So right now my outings consist of going to work, shooting for work, going to school, shooting homework. Fun times.

This week, my favorite outfit was Tuesday. I had to find something that I could wear to work, but would transition for the opening of Glimpse, the BFA show that I was in (mentioned here), and drinks afterwards.

I paired my Emporio Armani vintage boyfriend blazer, with a Banana Republic long sleeve cotton tee, a cute Wow Couture skirt, that looks like it’s made of cassette tape ribbon, and my stacked booties. Love it!

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: hotness

4 Dec Screen shot 2011-12-04 at 1.01.49 AM

I’m addicted to The mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl!

It’s a web series that I was told about in the late Summer by my coworker homie, who actually knows creator, Issa Rae. He told me he thought I’d like it (probably because of my own awkwardness), and that I should check it out. At the time, Episode 2 was on his screen, I watched maybe a minute, didn’t understand what was going on, and just forgot about the show.  Another month later he told me about it again, but I still didn’t check it out.  It wasn’t until over the last couple weeks, I started seeing the web series’ name continuously popping up in my Facebook news feed, and being mentioned by quite the many females that I think are pretty darn cool.  Finally I was swayed, I was having some technical difficulties during an all nighter, so what the hell, I had time.

Within the 1st 10 seconds of episode 1…

“Am I the only one who pretends I’m in a music video when I’m by myself?”

I was hooked. There are only 11 episodes, the 11th which just came out December 1st, so that night I sat and watched all of them back to back.  Sadly, I have to admit, I did the same thing the next night; watched the whoooole series…and half the episodes again, the day after that… I said I was addicted.

No one has really ever attempted to entertain my demographic, and although rapping isn’t my way to deal with stress, there were so many things throughout the episodes that were relatable! Both the story and character(s) are ACTUALLY relatable to me and my life, currently or in the past. Plus I was continuously laughing because the writing is darn good, better than half these sitcoms on TV.

Anyway, I can go on and on, but check out the series here.  I took the liberty of posting Episode 1 below.

See what others have been talking about…it really is that good.

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: music

3 Dec

Thanksgiving week I listened to this nonstop.  I’m kind of obsessed.

I’ve been a Florence + the Machine fan since that fateful winter day in February 2011,  when my neighbor gave me her debut album, Lungs; I’ve literally listened to that album on a weekly basis ever since.  That’s why I was surprised to see Florence Welch was on SNL, being her fashionable, fabulous, but shy self, and promoting her newest project Ceremonials with a choir. I’ve clearly been in a bubble the last few weeks!  She did a stellar job on SNL (you can see it here), but instead of showing that clip, see her cover Drake and Rihanna’s Take Care on BBCR1′s Live Lounge.

Apparently she had the opportunity to go to LA, and make a big studio pop album for her sophomore effort, which she actually considered, but pulled out.  Instead, she stayed in London and recorded Ceremonials at the infamous Abbey Road Studios, a project that is supposed to be a better Lungs, with bigger drums.  Thank good she did that! …I don’t know if its better than Lungs though, there’s a quirkiness about Lungs I enjoyed more…this album is almost produced too well, but I’m not going to complain about something being too good.

I know some people won’t get Florence or her music, but I think it’s amazing! There’s something about the big drums, with her voice, a set of headphones and walking down the streets of NYC, that has this overwhelming, ethereal like feeling. love it!

What the Water Gave Me (check the video below, set mostly during studio sessions at Abbey Road) and No Lights, No Lights are probably my favorite songs on the album.

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: style

19 Nov

Oh Halloween week…I don’t celebrate Halloween, can you tell?   Except for Monday, black was the dominant color to start off November.  I dress by mood, so I wonder what that means.

Tuesday I call my rock secretary look, although there was little desk work that day, instead i had to shoot VladTV’s interview with Tyrese. On Wednesday night I was a little bored, so I finally caved and bought a pair of stacked, wedged boots.  I’ve been toying with idea of getting the stacked wedge or Chelsea boots, actually, I desperately want Chelsea boots, but I haven’t found the right pair that I can afford, so stacked it was.

Even though I love my faux leather panel leggings from Friday, Tuesday was my favorite outfit. I rarely wear black on black, on black…..but here it works, something with the mixture of the angora cardigan against the sheer button down, works for me.

Style Tip of the Week: If you want to wear high heals wear them, and wear them with pride and confidence! On Tuesday Tyrese said some ish to me about “..its because you’re too damn tall.”  Most secure men think tall is sexy. They are just heels, I’m not actually over 6’0 without them, and really does all that matter when you’re laying down? lol. Also a good man, would never put you down or make you feel bad about something you have no control over.  So if you’re short or tall, rock your height and heels with pride, the day after Tyrese’s comment, I bought those 5 1/2 inch high stacked boots, and wore them 2 days straight, they’re the most comfortable shoes i now own!

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: style

19 Nov

I’m just going to knock all these backed-up Style Diaries out on this nice Saturday!

The last full week of October was a pretty good but a busy week.  On Tuesday I got a chance to see my artist and homie, DJ Dummy, kill it at Best Buy theater along side the amazing J.Cole, here in NYC.  On Thursday I went downtown to shoot the beautiful and quirky Amel Larrieux perform at City Winery; great show!  Other than that it was midterms week, and I was working like a maniac, so I kind of forgot to shoot a few outfits.  But hey, Tuesday‘s (this week’s fav outfit) blouse from my favorite vintage store Loveday 31, in Astoria, makes up for that.

Wearing such an adorned top, which i might add is so loose and comfortable, can dress anything up with very little effort.

Also the key for me this week, and most weeks, is wear a good lipstick color, when you’re half dead like I was Wednesday and Thursday, (i was actually dead on Friday) a little color goes a long away, it makes you appear more awake and put together than you actually are.

Happy Dressing!
