There’s been a lot a talk for a while now, about the Bob Marley documentary, Marley, Finally this spring on April 20th (fitting), the project by Academy Award-winning director, Kevin Macdonald, who did Last King of Scotland, comes out. Macdonald is known for his documentary work, so I’m excited to see what sort story/angle he’ll portray of the reggae legend. From the trailer, the project seems pretty engaging, and the beautiful shots of my homeland, Jamaica doesn’t hurt at all; it appears 4/20 is planned.

Wow…I’m baaack!
My last post was a fitting way to take a break. Fortunately it wasn’t a real break, it was just one from daily blogging…hey, I’ve been on my grind baby!
We’re entering year number 3, yowzers! Things may change a little this year at What Gets You Movin’, but the premise is still the same; highlight and share those people, things, events, issues or places that stir me creatively, emotionally, physically, or whatever other way one can be stirred.
What’s got me going since the top of the year (you may vaguely remember is was Song of the Day in late November, is Drake’s The Motto, I can’t help but dance.
Enjoy as we start Movin’ through 2012.

Thanksgiving week I listened to this nonstop. I’m kind of obsessed.

I’ve been a Florence + the Machine fan since that fateful winter day in February 2011, when my neighbor gave me her debut album, Lungs; I’ve literally listened to that album on a weekly basis ever since. That’s why I was surprised to see Florence Welch was on SNL, being her fashionable, fabulous, but shy self, and promoting her newest project Ceremonials with a choir. I’ve clearly been in a bubble the last few weeks! She did a stellar job on SNL (you can see it here), but instead of showing that clip, see her cover Drake and Rihanna’s Take Care on BBCR1′s Live Lounge.
Apparently she had the opportunity to go to LA, and make a big studio pop album for her sophomore effort, which she actually considered, but pulled out. Instead, she stayed in London and recorded Ceremonials at the infamous Abbey Road Studios, a project that is supposed to be a better Lungs, with bigger drums. Thank good she did that! …I don’t know if its better than Lungs though, there’s a quirkiness about Lungs I enjoyed more…this album is almost produced too well, but I’m not going to complain about something being too good.

I know some people won’t get Florence or her music, but I think it’s amazing! There’s something about the big drums, with her voice, a set of headphones and walking down the streets of NYC, that has this overwhelming, ethereal like feeling. love it!
What the Water Gave Me (check the video below, set mostly during studio sessions at Abbey Road) and No Lights, No Lights are probably my favorite songs on the album.

Check out DJ Dummy (J.Cole and Common’s DJ) talk about roughing it out on tour, J.Cole’s initial reaction to the success of Cole World: The Sideline Story, and why he thanks crappy DJs.
WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: inspirational souls
13 NovI just finished watching Red Bull Academy’s 2 hour lecture series with Erykah Badu! It’s hard for me to watch movies because I get antsy watching a screen for too long, but this was time very well spent, quite the engaging 2 hours!
The video came at the perfect time. I had literally finished writing my 1st journal entry in 16 months, and had written about finding inspiration, and getting reconnected with my soul again. And then BAM, right at the top screen, I see a Tweet Deck notification from Witches’ Brew saying “Erykah Badu – Up Close.” My photographer’s mind figured it was a picture so I clicked, but it turned out to be an interview with Ms. Badu.
As a music lover both on the creative side as well as the business side, the interview was enlighting, vivid, warm and refreshing. And made me wish i had reached my goal of being a producer by 30. More importantly is that you can’t help but love Erykah! I know she’ only 8 years older than me, but I want to be her when I grow up! She’s so chill, level-headed, funny, sexy without realizing it or trying know who she is and knows what she likes. Some how what most the video resonated with me so much in regards to today’s journal post today is how’s she’s ever evolving, how it drives her. I think somewhere in my trying to reach these many goals of mine, the movement towards them and the person controling the movement, got out of sync. And that person, that soul, is quite a few steps behind my movments. But anyway…
She might not affect you in the same way, but there’s no doubt in my mind that her energy will consume you in some way. So if you have some time, check, check, it out!
Anyway that’s something I’ll have to figure out, she may not affect you in the same way she did me. But there’s no doubt that her energy will consume you in some.
