style diary, week 7

20 Feb

What comes after a Week of Insanity (that’s what I dubbed Week 6)? …Madness?  I don’t know what it is, but last week was one hell of a week, and on top of that I had some technical difficulties; my baby (my camera) died!  Thankfully, as I write this, I’m getting more centered; next week’s Style Diary, among other things will be up (fairly) on time.  I’m really looking forward to next week, but I’ll tell you more about that when things are finalized, it involves a lot more writing though.

For Week 7 and even this upcoming week, I’ve fallen into my normal rut of lack of self-discipline. I rarely stick to things; I’m amazed and proud of myself that I’m able to say I’m posting Week 7 and working on Week 8.  Two months!  But when you’re running late for classes, going to meetings, on the phone constantly for your client, practicing hosting, working on personal photo projects, or just wanting to relax…taking a picture of what you sometimes literally threw on is not always fun, and there are many days that I think this whole thing is narcissistic and I want to quit. It’s actually the positive responses to the Style Diary and the many hits to the site that keeps me going, so a big thank you, to you!

You’ll notice that there is a new pair of boots on my feet this week!  There not quite the Sendra Old English boots I mentioned here, but they’ll work.  I can’t wait to wear them with dresses.  Also they worked out perfect with this snowy, icy weather we’ve been having here in NYC.  I feel I’ve been in a masculine and overly comfy phase lately, and these boots only add to it.

My favorite outfit of the week is Friday.  I don’t get to wear my Alfred Sung blouse very often, so it was great to finally wear it with the vintage lace-up boots like i envisioned.  My purse strap that I wear as a belt was the perfect touch.  Friday was also my favorite picture of the week. Oh and Wednesday was a snow day, no classes, and I stayed inside all day, no cameras allowed! =)

See you next week, early, for Week 8!

style diary, week 6

10 Feb

The Week of Insanity, that I mentioned in Week 5, kicked my butt, I’m still recuperating, but I tried my best to look fly, while managing to keep my head from exploding. This week I decided to change things up on how i shot the pictures.   I knew we were going to start working with triptychs at the beginning of the semester, so I decided to experiment a little early.  I’m on the fence on if I like it for the Style Diary. You can see each piece better, but there is just something about seeing an outfit  in its entirety.

I have to admit, it was a bit of a struggle this week to put on clothes, and deal with 15-hour+ days again; juggling so many aspects of my life.  More than anything comfort took precedence.  I was also extremely excited that I FINALLY replaced my stolen fedora!!!  (Sadly last spring someone stole my hat off my head while I was passed out on the train)  I wore it for almost 2 years, and it was my favorite hat, so I was heartbroken.  Now my heart is mended and you’ll be seeing my fedora a lot more.  I have a thing for fedoras, maybe it was my obsession with Indiana Jones and his big brim fedora as a kid.  (although I only wear short brim fedoras)

I’m kind of indifferent about my outfits this week; i think I’m in a funk.  If I have to choose though, Tuesday is my favorite…when in doubt putting on an Armani blazer always makes you feel better I suppose.  My favorite collection of pictures are Friday.  I think it’s more interesting than the rest, and the boots look vibrant against the black and white background.

Thank god for snow days, so I can play catch up. Next week’s goal, Style Diary on time!

Style Diary: Week 4

25 Jan

This week I’ve dubbed, the Week of Sloth. Except for Thursday and Saturday, I didn’t go anywhere further than walking distance.  Clothes took a bit of a back seat, I wore a robe from Monday night until Wednesday afternoon!  And I was too lazy to change my jeans over the weekend. I honestly don’t think it’s strange or gross, most people when they can (i think…) do the same thing, it’s just not documented, so it’ll be our little secret.  Funny, for Week #3 I was on vacation, yet i stayed active as if work was the priority, and now I’m back in NYC and I’ve taken a mind fart.  I’m not going to beat myself up about it, because starting February 1st, my life will be turned upside down again, juggling managing DJ Dummy, going to school full-time, and trying to get a couple projects off the ground.  So cheers to sloth!

I’m partly joking about the sloth thing, I was actually quite productive this week (i just barely left the house), but the goal was comfort with very little effort and thought.  My favorite outfit of the week was Friday, I think it’s comfortable, and perfectly displayed how I felt that day.  My favorite picture was Tuesday, I liked the shadows from the blinds and I think I might convert that robe into a dress or something…I’m feeling the fabric! Overall I’ll admit, the week was kind of bland…but i don’t think being stylish means pushing the envelope everyday.  Oh and to clarify, I only got dressed to workout on Monday…not covering your buttocks while wearing leggings is a no go under any other circumstance.

Enjoy the week, stay inspired!

style diary: week 3

18 Jan

I started week 3 in Florida and ended it back in good ‘ol NYC.  I’ll start by saying please forgive Sunday’s outfit, it was my 1st day back, and the weather was crap, so I only left the house to do laundry, and I’ll leave it at. (hahaha that kind of rhymed)  Anyway, I just had to put that disclaimer out there…i love that shirt, i think its hilarious, but wearing it out seems like I’m trying to advertise.

Although it wasn’t particularly hot in Florida, I decided to make use of the sunshine and hang out with my mom’s new cows.  I was happy with quite a number of the shots; you can’t go wrong with natural light.  My favorite image is Friday, it was a breezy afternoon, and I love how the scarf and dress swayed in the wind; my favorite outfit though is Tuesday.  Probably anytime I wear that dress it will win my outfit vote, it’s my go-to casual dress!  It was a great find from my good friends at Loveday 31, an awesome vintage shop in Astoria.  Monday almost won, because I think it’s the closest mesh of my style (although i don’t feel i have or should have to have a particular one), but as I said, I love that dress. What are some of your thoughts?

*** oh and actually click on the pictures or links, I find that the colors are a bit more accurate and less compressed than what’s embedded in the blog.

Until next week…

style diary: week 2

11 Jan

In week two of my Style Diary I had to challenge myself to not go against my initial idea, which I always have a habit of doing. Most times I usually should follow my gut, and there are other times, like I think now, that I should have listened to the other voice in my head.

I had this idea of playing with seated positions for this week.  I wanted to change up the scenery, but I quickly learned that I prefer consistency in my backgrounds, it looks cleaner, and from a photographic standpoint, by the end of the week handling the lighting becomes really easy because you become familiar with the setting.  Regardless, I’m suppose to document what I’m wearing, and not how or where I took the picture.

This week I went back home to my small hometown in Florida to visit my family. There is not too much to do when I’m home, and even less when its 30 degrees in the Sunshine state (it was too cold to leave the house Saturday & Sunday).  When I’m home it’s a great time to relax with family & friends, listen to the singing of cicadas, eat good food, and not fuss about clothing.

I have another week here, and I’m pretty sure by the end of it I’ll be screaming for the streets of NYC. But for now I’m just going to chill, it makes no sense to get all decked out to walk up and down the mall or Wal-Mart.

This week, it was a toss-up between Monday and Friday, but my favorite outfit was Friday. The colors made me feel happy and vibrant, plus it was a great day of seeing old friends…just one of those days when you feel great about yourself. Hope you have one of those days; enjoy the week!

style diary: week 1

4 Jan

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been toying with this idea of documenting everything i wear for a year, an experiment of sorts, better yet, a styling diary.  I’m not some self-professed fashionista, nor do I have an exuberant amount of clothing; I actually don’t even like shopping.  What I do like, are to wear clothes and mix and match outfits, as a now extremely budget conscious freelancer hit by the recession, I find doing this very challenging, but fun.  More than anything, I love how clothes can just describe your mood, or say something about you as a person.  I can’t fully describe why I’m doing this Style Diary, because I don’t fully know why, but you can join me along the ride as I figure it out in my head.

My Style Diary won’t be like flipping through Elle magazine, wishing you could somehow save up for the new Balenciaga ballerina flats.  It also won’t be like looking at the red carpet style pages of your weekly smut mag, sorry my life isn’t that exciting.  Although i have my dealings with the ‘industry,’ I’m a pretty regular, but dress conscious kind of girl.  I do have the luxury of doing things in spurts, so there will be times I don’t leave the house for days or don’t change my clothes, because I’m curled up with a good book or I’m working on a project, and my clothes will surely reflect that.  I’m mostly running errands, and now I’ve added classes to my schedule, but there are other times when I need to get creative with my limited wardrobe, because I’m always on the go, and I have events to continually get dressed for.  Regardless, over the years, I never thought that comfort would overshadow glamor, but it has begun to, so you’ll notice that most things are quite comfy.

I’m excited to get this idea started, the only part that sucks is now I can’t double up on an outfit in a week, thinking no one really saw it (yes, I’ve done that =) ), because now everyone will really see it!

This week my favorite outfit was Wednesday when I went to Greenhouse and Negril Village.  The skirt was new, i got a great deal on it; I love thrift shops!
