WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: inspirational souls

13 Nov

I just finished watching Red Bull Academy’s 2 hour lecture series with Erykah Badu! It’s hard for me to watch movies because I get antsy watching a screen for too long, but this was time very well spent, quite the engaging 2 hours!

The video came at the perfect time. I had literally finished writing my 1st journal entry in 16 months, and had written about finding inspiration, and getting reconnected with my soul again. And then BAM, right at the top screen, I see a Tweet Deck notification from Witches’ Brew saying “Erykah Badu – Up Close.”  My photographer’s mind figured it was a picture so I clicked, but it turned out to be an interview with Ms. Badu.

As a music lover both on the creative side as well as the business side, the interview was enlighting, vivid, warm and refreshing.  And made me wish i had reached my goal of being a producer by 30.  More importantly is that you can’t help but love Erykah!  I know she’ only 8 years older than me, but I want to be her when I grow up!  She’s so chill, level-headed, funny,  sexy without realizing it or trying know who she is and knows what she likes.  Some how what most the video resonated with me so much in regards to today’s journal post today is how’s she’s ever evolving, how it drives her.  I think somewhere in my trying to reach these many goals of mine, the movement towards them and the person controling the movement, got out of sync.  And that person, that soul, is quite a few steps behind my movments. But anyway…

She might not affect you in the same way, but there’s no doubt in my mind that her energy will consume you in some way.  So if you have some time, check, check, it out!

Anyway that’s something I’ll have to figure out, she may not affect you in the same way she did me. But there’s no doubt that her energy will consume you in some.

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: video

It’s been a good month! Like the Adele video I posted, here’s another video that goes with the words and vibe of the song.

Rihanna’s new video We Found Love, is so good, that I can give the very weak dance song a pass.  I end up just wanting to rave, have a great, hazy-weekend, that ends with a few interesting stories, and maybe, just maybe, love.

WHAT GET YOU MOVIN?: music

T.I. has jumped on the “Ni**as in Paris” track from Jay-Z and Kanye’s album Watch the Throne.  I’m not the biggest T.I. fan, but I actually like his verse.  My issue is that he just added his verse to the original track, so by the time Kanye says, “She said Ye can we get married at the maaaall,” I forgot T.I’s verse.

People have been rapping the words, to quite possibly the strongest track on WTT for 2 months,…should have gotten out earlier, Tip.  Great attempt though..

Since Wednesday, I’ve been listening to the Shady 2.0 Cypher, from Tuesday night’s BET Hip-Hop Awards.  Out of all the cyphers, Shady Records brought the strongest team, and pretty much slaughtering everyone.  The Slaughterhouse crew included my boy, Yelawolf (who you may remember made Hotness of the Week, 2 weeks ago), Joe Budden, Crooked I, Joel Ortiz, Royce the 5’9″, and of course, Emenim.

Everyone came strong, Joel was probably the weakest if you have to draw comparisons, but that’s only because we’ve heard him come harder on other tracks.  Regardless, everyone brought their own flavor, and Em killed it, everyone’s faces at the end of his verse says it all.

During Spring/Summer 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion week, I went to many shows, one of my favorite was Honor; remember some of my pictures I posted (click here)?

In addition to going to the show, I also got a chance to speak to Honor designer, Giovanna Randall as well as actress Tracee Ellis-Ross. Take a peek at some of my conversation, as well as the collection in motion!

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: hotness

1 Oct

Yelawolf

I’ve decided to add a new category to What Gets You Movin, and that would be ‘Hotness’!  Since I was about 14, I’ve had these mini crushes on people, a new person almost every other week.  Nothing serious, just someone or sometimes a subject/entity that heightens my radar for the moment.  I’m always sharing these peeps and things to my friends, so why not share them with you also!

For the 1st Hotness feature, I’m highlighting southern rapper, Yelawolf.  I’ve liked Yelawolf for some time now, I was introduced to his name in early 2010, when a friend of mine kept telling me to check out his music.  During that summer, his name continued to pop up, but it wasn’t until Fool’s Gold’s 1st Day Off, last Labor Day weekend, that I got a chance to see Catfish Billy in action; his performance was captivating to say the least.  He pretty much left everyone with their mouth open in awe of his raw talent and energy.  I happened to be beside Dave 1, of Chromeo while Yelawolf performed, and he just kept repeating how crazy this dude’s performance was. Anyone who was unfamiliar with the rapper beforehand, was running to check out his mixtape, Truck Muzik the next day, me included…and so began my intrigue with Yelawolf.

Before we get much further, we’re hitting the home stretch of 2011, I must admit that although I’ve kept an ear out for Yelawolf’s upcoming album (which finally drops Oct 25), he’s been kind of off my radar for most of the year.  Well, minus the time earlier this year, when i was looking at some pictures of him, and I realized how cute he was.  It wasn’t until he came into my job at Vlad TV last week for an interview, that he came back full force on my radar.  Unfortunately I wasn’t in the office the day of the interview, but I was assigned to edit it, and might i say, what a nice assignment!  I can’t reveal all the info that is covered in the interview, because you’ll have to go to Vlad TV over the next couple weeks to see. But for 2 full days of editing, where Yelawolf’s face filled my computer screen, not only did i get to look at quite an attractive specimen (his eyes and eyelashes are to die for!), but i got to find out that the dude is humble, level-headed, chill, and although he talks with audible ellipsis (i do the same thing) he’s quite the articulate rapper.

Check out how he goes in on V-Nasty and white people in general, for using the N-Word; as a fellow southerner I appreciate his words and perspective. If you aren’t familiar with V-Nasty, as Yelawolf clearly wasn’t (his reaction was HILARIOUS! ‘who??’ hahaha) then here’s a sneak peek of her dumb ass.  But before that, feel free to check out Yelawolf’s hotness, oooooh weee!

WHAT GETS YOU MOVIN?: photography

Check out this shoot for French magazine Madame Figaro that Cameron Diaz did.

I heart Cameron Diaz, but I do got to say that lighting and Photoshop are her best friends,  In this shoot it was more the lighting.

I tried to find out who the photographer was, but couldn’t find it anywhere on the net.  Boooo on not giving photographer’s credit!
