in the know…

13 Feb

For those in Dallas for NBA All-Star weekend, I’m going to let you in on the places to be, to actually have fun!  If you’ve every gone to the annual event, many of these parties are headlined with athletes and then predominantly stuffed with people who will pay a pretty penny to be around them.  But they’re in some special VIP, that very few can get to, so it ends being an event with a lot of random people looking around and not really partying or the events are filled with girls trying to get to the athletes, and guys pretending or proving that they have clout, to compensate for not being an athlete.  Not really my definition of fun, but hey I guess it’s something to experience at least once; I need cool people and an amazing DJ to have fun.

The great thing about this year’s All-Star Weekend, is that it’s right around the corner of Texas native, Erykah Badu’s, album release, and she’s have a big bash with Jamie Foxx to celebrate.  Also Common’s performing on Sunday at Ghostbar.  I’m always an advocate of good music being part of the formula of any weekend outing.

If you want a party with music lovers, artists/industry folk, people who actually like to have a good ‘ol time…and yes athletes, then head to some of the spots DJ Dummy is spinning.  On Saturday in the day, right before the Slam Dunk Contest, he’ll be rockin’ Kenichi (that’s the flier above).

Sunday it’s all about 944 Magazine, who has one of the most talked about parties of the weekend (check out their list of events).

Dummy will be spinning 944’s game viewing party at Boardroom, and then will be shutting things down with the Common show and after party at Ghostbar.

Oh and Dj Dummy’s has just been added to the sexy Venus vs. Mars party, along with DJ Eque Saturday night at Victory Tavern.  You can check the video invite HERE.

It’s going to be a fun weekend Dallas! Enjoy!

in the know…

29 Jan

There’s a secret location in Brooklyn. Well, not exactly a secret, but an undisclosed cathedral caged door that opens into a divinely lit dancing sanctuary.  Finding this treasure is far from hard, but to add to its ambiance there’s no sign on the door, so I tell you, it’s called Deity.

On the border of Downtown Brooklyn and Cobble Hill, this 2 story gem is worth the trip because it holds the sounds of some of the best DJs in the world.  This weekend in particular, DJ Dummy rocks the Underground; I really can’t wait!

Dummy truly understands how to communicate ‘have a good time’ to any crowd.  And have a good time I will! No pretentious clubs, two-stepping & profiling to choppy DJ transitions, but instead just really dancing and vibing out; remembering what good Hip-Hop and music in general sounds like. It’s a perfect way to warm up on a cold night, no fuss. It’s an experience that leaves a smile on your face.

Come out and experience a DJ Dummy party.  Saturday. Deity. Brooklyn. Don’t say i didn’t tell you…

something to marvel about…

25 Jan

This morning I had the very fortunate opportunity to watch the first 2 episodes of the new animated series Black Panther.  I say fortunate, because 3 hours later all content was pulled from the internet! booooooo! And since the cartoon only airs in Australia on ABC3, I have to wait until the next leak to watch episode 3.

Black Panther is a collaboration between Marvel Comics and BET. Many know that i boycott BET and their predominately ignorant content, but I’m making an exception for Black Panther!  It’s refreshing to see a black super hero, African scenery, and tribal Africans who are educated and technologically advanced in a cartoon.  In addition, Black Panther is easy to follow and engaging, we get to learn a super hero’s story from the beginning and there are familiar faces like Captain America, Storm, Wolverine, and Jaggernaut to name a few.

The series debuted on January 16th, and with a star-studded roster, including Jill Scott as the voice of the legendary X-men Storm, Dijimon Hounsou as Black Panther, Stan Lee as General Wallace, Kerry Washington as Princess Shuri, JB Blanc as The Black Knight & Batroc, Carl Lumbly as Uncle S’Yan, and Alfre Woodard as Dondi Reese, this better be coming stateside soon!!!

Since the episodes are gone, below is the trailer, but it gives the series NOOOOOO justice at all.

the pursuit of happiness…

24 Jan

Anyone that knows me, knows that I’m big into psychology and self-help…go ahead and judge.  And from a very young age, I’ve always had this weird overwhelming desire to find happiness.  I’ve grown to realize it’s not something to be found, but more about your mindset.  I’m not always the most positive person, so the whole euphoria thing is challenging, but I’m consciously and continually rewiring my thought process.

Oddly over the last week, I was reflecting on how much of a pessimist I can be and how cynical I am, and how I need to be more open. Then I watched Conan O’Brien’s last show, and he mentioned at the end of his monologue, particularly to young people, to not be cynical and how cynicism is his least favorite character trait, and being that way gets you no where; it struck a cord. It’s so true, if you are open, not judgmental, and can think positively about life and the people in it, not everything will be as you envisioned, but good things will come to you. Plus ‘lucky’ people rarely are cynics.

Anyway, below is something I clipped from Self Magazine in January of ’09, and it’s been on my vision board ever since.  Maybe it’ll bring a little happiness in your life, I like to do #1 every night (you can judge me again).  I also posted the clip from Conan I was referring to.

It’s a new day, be happy! =)

i love vodka…

22 Jan

I do love Vodka, not really Absolut though….i’m more of a Grey Goose, Kettle One, 32 Below, Finlandia or Svedka kind of girl.  Regardless Absolut gets cool points in my book for their Spike Jonze collaboration.

Absolut teamed up with Spike Jonze, and gave him total creative control to make a short film. The imaginative result was I’m Here, which debuted yesterday (1/21) at the Sundance Film Festival.

I’ve posted the trailer, I really enjoyed it…it struck a cord with me. The soundtrack includes original music by Sam Spiegel and original songs by L.A.-based art musician Aska Matsumiya and other emerging musicians.

What do you dream about?

i have a theory…

10 Jan

I have a theory… I think we’re going to start seeing an abnormal amount of young people, particularly 30 something females, dropping down dead from heart attacks.  There’s not a direct correlations, with the recent passing of Brittany Murphy (age 32) and Casey Johnson (age 30), but their sudden deaths made me think of it.

Over the past 15 years we’ve seen an increase of people using diet pills to lose weight.  A large number of these ‘effective’ diet pills, contain ephedrine/ephedra.  Although most don’t admit to it, a large portion of the successful ‘celebrity diets,’ are attributed to ephedra–based supplements such as Superdrine, Metabothin, Ripped Power and Yellow Devils.

People may lose weight, but when they take these drugs their heart rate, blood pressure, and body heat are all increased.  On top of that, these crazy people still exercise! They’re making their heart work harder than it needs to.  I feel (and I’m not a medical expert, but I’ve been surrounded by them my entire life) that with continual use you are weakening your heart.  By 30 something your heart is like that of a 60 or 70-year-old, or it’s just plan ‘ol tired, so it stops and you drop dead.

It has become so common now, that while walking down the halls of my university, I overheard two teens (mind u they weren’t fat) discussing loosing weight.  One girl suggested coke, but the other girl responded that she had done that before, and didn’t feel like going that route.  She said that instead she was just going to take Superdrine or something to that effect.  This kind of talk has become so commonplace, it’s so sad.

New products containing orange bitter, like MetaboSpeed, have been added to the market in wake of many deaths from ephedra, they are supposedly ‘healthier,’ but essentially do the same thing.  I could be wrong, but taking diet pills seem like the lazy (and hazardous!) option.  It’s a burden and takes extra effort, but I’m a big advocate of upping the greens, fluids, exercise, and getting your mind right.

…oh and a grown ass woman who is a size 00 is just not sexy!
