long live the french!

4 Jan

This week’s album of the week is French band, Phoenix’s album Wolfgang Amedeus Phoenix. When I saw them nominated for a Grammy, i was like who?  Then I saw them listed on a couple top 2009 album lists, by people whom I respect their musical tastes, so I gave them a listen.

It’s a fun album, I’ve been listening to it non-stop for the last couple of days.  For me most of the album sounds like what an amazing day during the summer feels like, if that makes sense.  Take a listen, it feels good.  I’m glad they got a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album.  Even though sadly getting a Grammy nod this year isn’t saying much, it seem like a pop happy teenager made the picks.  Remember when getting a Grammy was a barometer for greatness? …apparently we have no more music award shows that will set the standard.  I hope Oscar doesn’t jump off the same cliff…

style diary: week 1

4 Jan

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been toying with this idea of documenting everything i wear for a year, an experiment of sorts, better yet, a styling diary.  I’m not some self-professed fashionista, nor do I have an exuberant amount of clothing; I actually don’t even like shopping.  What I do like, are to wear clothes and mix and match outfits, as a now extremely budget conscious freelancer hit by the recession, I find doing this very challenging, but fun.  More than anything, I love how clothes can just describe your mood, or say something about you as a person.  I can’t fully describe why I’m doing this Style Diary, because I don’t fully know why, but you can join me along the ride as I figure it out in my head.

My Style Diary won’t be like flipping through Elle magazine, wishing you could somehow save up for the new Balenciaga ballerina flats.  It also won’t be like looking at the red carpet style pages of your weekly smut mag, sorry my life isn’t that exciting.  Although i have my dealings with the ‘industry,’ I’m a pretty regular, but dress conscious kind of girl.  I do have the luxury of doing things in spurts, so there will be times I don’t leave the house for days or don’t change my clothes, because I’m curled up with a good book or I’m working on a project, and my clothes will surely reflect that.  I’m mostly running errands, and now I’ve added classes to my schedule, but there are other times when I need to get creative with my limited wardrobe, because I’m always on the go, and I have events to continually get dressed for.  Regardless, over the years, I never thought that comfort would overshadow glamor, but it has begun to, so you’ll notice that most things are quite comfy.

I’m excited to get this idea started, the only part that sucks is now I can’t double up on an outfit in a week, thinking no one really saw it (yes, I’ve done that =) ), because now everyone will really see it!

This week my favorite outfit was Wednesday when I went to Greenhouse and Negril Village.  The skirt was new, i got a great deal on it; I love thrift shops!

album of the week 12.28.09

30 Dec

I’m not going to write reviews on every album of the week, partly because i’m on vacation, plus that was my job in in 2005.  Mos Def’s The Ecstatic (one of the best albums of the year) is this week’s pick because I was in a ‘real’ hip-hop mood, plus I can not stop sing-humming that part of Auditorium…”badada bada da ba dada, badada bada da ba dada, su su sido bopidy sido bopidy sido bopidy, keep on rockin it…”

Check the album, you’ll rock your head!

i gotta 35mm in ya face…

25 Dec

Last month you may remember that i had a post about a project that I was working on tentatively called In My Bed. I never decided on a title, so In My Bed will suffice.  The project, which was for my 35mm film class (yes people still use film), documented real moments that occur in the private sanctuary we call the bed.

Minus a few tweeks and parts where I went against my gut, I’m happy overall with the results, especially since I was all over the place on how I wanted to document it.  I ended up looking at each person as a character and the bed was their environment, and from there some how capture a dialogue within that moment that could be considered ‘documentary-style.’

The series included 15 images; here are 5 of my favorites.  The image that started this post didn’t make it, but I’m still pleased with it.

creativejuice! creativejuice! creativejuice!

I’ve wanted to see the Tim Burton exhibit since its opening in late November, but my schedule hasn’t been conducive to doing so.  Finally on Christmas Eve I made it over to MoMa to check out the exhibition.  All I have to say is that everyone, especially my creative friends should check it out.  Whether you are an artist or just a movie lover you will really enjoy this display of work.

The exhibit is probably one of the most extensive collections I’ve ever viewed.  Not only does the collection take a comprehensive look at Tim Burton’s career, it also looks into his mind and his thought process as a person and creator.  The exhibit includes work from when Burton was in high school, even a letter he wrote to Disney to have a book published as a teenager.  Continually as i moved by each drawing, painting, sketch, each sculpture, storyboard, costume, video, and more, I couldn’t help but think about how crucial it is to cultivate and nurture the creative mind of the youth.  To be able to convey and articulate what you see in your mind is an amazing feat.

There are no words or descriptions that I can give to encapsulate how this documentation of Burton’s work moved me and kept me completely engaged for ever moment I was in there.  I’m excited to go again; because I went on Christmas Eve, exhibit time was limited and there was an uncomfortable amount of people.  Plus i didn’t get to take in the entire Film series they have in the theaters.

For now, my favorite part of the exhibit are Burton’s sketches and short story excerpts from The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Short Stories. They made me smile, I’ll be purchasing the book shortly!

The exhibit will be on view until April 26, 2010, i highly recommend checking it out, it surely will activate your creative juices.

beautifully human fancy footwork

25 Dec

Finally a post after an exhausting 2 weeks, plus a brain fart, and some procrastinating! As mentioned in the previous post I was dealing with finals, plus things are getting busy with Dummy. In Rainbows without a doubt maintained my sanity, in fact I’m listening to it right now.  In Rainbows’ week was full of exams and what not, so after that week (last week), I needed to change gears.  Last week my final projects were due, and anyone that knows me, knows that I’m super critical and tend to rip myself and my work apart.  To help me counteract this unhealthy habit, I used Jill Scott as my therapist of sorts.  Her Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2 album, was mellow, sexy, and some how kept me confident as a person (artist) and woman. Thanks Jill!

I don’t know about you, but after 2 weeks of finals i want to PARTAY! That’s what this week is all about…well i guess Christmas if you’re into that sort of thing…so let’s just say this week is about celebrating then, shall we? This week’s album is Chromeo’s Fancy Footwork. I CAN NOT stop listening to it! I had to make them the Album of the Week especially since i didn’t realize i was listening to them here and there, for the last 6 months.

I’ll explain, one of my favorite stations I have on Pandora, is based on a mix formed from N.E.R.D. and Cut Copy.  Whether it’s Pandora, verbal suggestions, catching a live show, etc I always write down groups that I enjoy or stir something in me.  Wait, I have to back track for this to make sense. So a few weeks ago A-trak posted Chromeo’s newest project Night by Night.  I listened to the song, watched the video, and loved their entire vibe, but didn’t really think anything of it, except that…hmmm music needs something like that. Then a little after that post, i found one of my many, many notebooks that i couldn’t kind for months and saw I had scribbled down, ‘Chromeo!’, among other artists, from a go-round on Pandora, but i didn’t put it together.  I’ve been in album mode, and hadn’t listened to Pandora in a minute, so while i was getting ready to go out, i put my N.E.R.D/Cut Copy station on so i could get my going out vibes flowing.  Anyway, I hear this song (which turned out to be Bonafied Lovin) and after uncontrollably busting into a 2-step, the Night by Night video flashed in my head, and i knew it had to be Chromeo…it was probably the synthesizer.  I ended up being correct, figured it was a sign, I immediately starting looking up their work, and I’ve been addicted ever since. Highly 80s influenced music, that is relevant, and somehow oddly modern? Whatever it is, i love it…I’m looking forward to their new project.

album of the week: 12.07.09

8 Dec

For those that don’t know, outside of managing DJ Dummy, i’m back in school getting a second Bachelors. Instead of learning boring but useful Business and Marketing, I’m learning Photography!  I love it, but December means it’s the end of the semester, which means FINALS; that means things are more than hectic.

I’ve finally gotten some sleep so I don’t need Kid Sister’s Ultraviolet album to keep me up. But what that does mean, is i need something that will keep me sane, centered, and level-headed. The album to do that is Radiohead’s In Rainbows (sorry Imeem doesn’t have the entire album). In Rainbows is an album that i have literally listened to every single solitary week since the November 2007 release where you could pay whatever you wanted, even nothing. (i payed for mine ;0) ) I love Radiohead, but there’s something in particular about In Rainbows that just gets my head right. I’m not sure what it is, maybe it’s just the perfect balance of upbeat and mellow…or maybe because when it came out I was in a major personal transition…i don’t know. But whatever it is, the album is a roborant remedy for me. That’s why it’ll be the album of the week. If you’ve been under some boulders, i’d advise checking it out.
