twitter seems to have converted even the snobbish of sort…

7 Dec

Do you TwitPic? On occasion I do, when necessary…like last week when a grown ass man was wearing pink, rhinestone encrusted Hello Kitty slippers on the train, i HAD to share…as i digress.

Apparently Twitter’s alternate picture upload site, TwitPic has tickled the fancy of the fashion industry.  This month’s issue of Italian Vogue is dedicated to Twitter.  Along with a great publicist, Italian Vogue always seems to stay relevant, remember all the stir around the
All Black Issue this past summer?  Anyway, the cover of the new issue is a collage of model twitpics and inside is a spread, under direction of Steven Meisel, of models such as Christy Turlington, Natalia Vodianova, and Gisele Bundchen twitpic-ing themselves.

I’m not usually a big fan of the whole twitter thing becoming mainstream; yet there is something engaging about the concept.  I also like the sort of grainy, lo-res, unprofessional appeal of the pictures; a nice change of pace, of the over glossed magazine pictures that we normally see.  Kudos to Italian Vogue.

taking in some ultraviolet.

3 Dec

omg, what a week, so far! i’ve only slept 2 hours in the last 60+ hours!!!

…fortunately i’m not Stressed Out. Mostly because i’ve been listening to Kid Sister’s Ultraviolet album. All last week I was listening to Brazilian music, then from Thanksgiving onward, Kid Sister has taken over my life.
Ultraviolet is my new workout album for December…but its quickly turning into my keep me awake and upbeat album. (just a few minutes separates me with my pillow, i can’t wait!)

As I digress…I know i’m a few days late but Kid Sister’s Ultraviolet is the album of the week.  Don’t get me wrong, it not some prolific album or something. At 1st listen my music snobbery was peaked and i began to judge, plus i didn’t know anything about Kid Sister. But i found the Dance…Hip-Hop/Bass…Bending/Dance…what ever genre they’d like to call it… album infectious; its simple, but i keep putting it back on.  It’s the Southern girl in me; I’m just happy that someone is updating the southern 90s energy into something that isn’t nauseating …or maybe that’s how Chi-town rolls and i didn’t know all this time.  Regardless, good shit!

Let Me Bang 2009 is my fav…that’s my vibe…and Kid Sister seems relatable, refreshing!  Pro Nails (featuring Kanye) was released a looong time ago, but i sure nuff did my nails after listening to it, hahaha.  Day Dreaming is a nice way to transition that kind of MGNT vibe; Cee-lo was a nice addition.  And I like You Aint Really Down, it seems like an ode to 90s R&B (sounded like Michel’le jumped on for a few notes, lol), I wonder if more singing will be incorporated in the next album? hmmm… that could be fun. There are a  few weak, album-filler songs, but over all, you can’t help to just feel lighter when you listen to Ultraviolet…that’s what Dance is supposed to do, right?

it’s all about the technic…

28 Nov

Apparently the turntable staple of the DJing industry, Technics, is halting production of Technics 1200s and Technics 1210s in early 2010, due to lack of sales.  I’m sure Serato can be accredited to the lack of sales, it is a genius invention…but oh technology; electronic evolution.  As one thing develops, then the former ceases to extincts…sad cycle.

I’m a big fan of pairing feminine pieces with either masculine or gritty items. So when I saw this cute navy blue ruffled jacket for only $86 (@ fredflare.com), i couldn’t help but want to pair it with a pair of distressed jeans; I envisioned gray ones.  I doubt the jacket is lined, but as a soft poly/wool blend, it would be ideal for the rest of autumn, especially if you just layer a sweater underneath.

These jeans from Genetic Demin could work….

I went to the opening of Coup d’etat Brooklyn’s Live to Change Something Through Art exhibit this past weekend.  There’s nothing like being on the streets of Bed Stuy, which sometimes feels creatively arid, and finding an awe-inspiring gem.

The mission of Coup d’etat Brooklyn, which is Live to Change Something, resonates in the form of paintings, photography, and sculpture. The exhibit explores cultural conditions and iconic influences who have contributed to the New York City’s Art scene.

Above is my favorite piece, Everything of Nothing & Nothing of Everything When I Talk to You; the picture gives the tangible version no justice.  This is a slab of wood, where the picture is etched in, not painted on.  The way that the artist, Taganyahu Swaby, is able to create depth is amazing, it’s the minutia that brings everything together and makes the piece so sick!  Go check it out in person.

The show features artists that live or have been impacted by Brooklyn.  All this is happening in BK at Skylight Gallery in Restoration Plaza until February 20, 2010, so head over there…and pieces are for sale.

playing catch up…

23 Nov

On Thursday, i had an evening filled with my 2 favs…art and music.  I headed over to Level 2, for Eric Haze’s art show.  It was pretty good.  I initially went, because I’m quickly becoming a big fan of A-trak and his blog, and he wrote about his experience at a barbecue or something, where he saw Haze’s work with some of Hip-Hop’s legends…you can read about it here. Anyway, so he created this great visual, so i was super ciced, especially as a photographer, to check it out.  Unfortunately there was no photography, I wanted to see contacts sheets…something.  There were some pretty decent abstract modern paintings and what looked like some interesting work on paper.  ‘Abstract’ isn’t exactly my motif, but regardless the show was good, it was great turn out, and the vibe was convivial, mostly because of A-trak’s music selection. The exhibit will be up until the 2nd week of December, so go check it out.

After Haze’s show, I was off to Mercury Lounge…but i made a pit stop at Strand, and found a Crossword Puzzle Dictionary for $1! Yes, that actually made my day.

So Mercury Lounge. The Dig will be a band that you will hear me refer to many times in my blog.  Not only are they my peeps, but they’re also an amazing band, whose live shows are incredible. They just came back from a mini-tour, so this was a welcome back show of sorts.  I can’t wait until their new album comes out, I’ll let you have an exclusive little listen to a track….hope they don’t kill me. sssshhhhh =)

crap…it can’t be uploaded for some reason. I’ll work on it so that it’s available in a later post.

in my bed…

21 Nov

ok, so Monday was supposed to be the blog start date, i’ve been pretty bad about updating posts, seeing that this is only number 2.  As i figure out balance, this thing will get into full swing.  There’s a couple of things in the next few days that I want to share, and after that i will (positive language lol) keep it coming.

I’m working on a project that looks at people’s relationships with their beds.  The bed is this intimate, private place where we sleep and have sex, but most of us do much more there.  In this place where we end and start our day and most don’t see, we rest, think, play, cry, read, hide, recuperate…you get the idea.

In my search for inspiration and clarity on how i want to shoot the project, I came across this image.  The picture is called Leprosy, from Jan Sochor.  It’s quite a simple picture, but evokes a lot of emotion, pain, and mystery.  Is that man in agony or is he dead?  The image made me stop, it captivated me…so much so, that i doing my photography presentation on it for History of Photography.  There’s something about documentary photography/photojournalism that doesn’t compare to anything else.  Reality is so much more interesting than perfection.
