“and some might say that he’s a dummy…”

4 Mar

I shot extraordinary party DJ, Music Director, Producer, and DJ for Common, DJ Dummy…ok, ok, ok and my artist, a few weeks ago. Here are a few of the images.  I can’t wait until it gets warmer, so we can go on location and hopefully get more creative shots!

Loving the Forever Roc Raida t-shirt picture, RIP Raida you are thoroughly missed.

Also check him out live every morning 7-9 AM, at the Breakfast Club. He starts your day off right…no more angry mornings!

You may have figured out by now that Music and Photography are my passions.  One of my favorite sites/photographers that infuse my passions is photobytone.com.  Tone’s work is the closest I’ve seen to what direction I’d ideally like to go with my craft.  He’s able to bring photography, music, and the random minutia that inspires him, together in an intriguing way.  Much of his work also involves visually appealing intimate video interviews with musicians.

His recent posting, 431, is with The Kid Daytona.  I’ve known Daytona for a couple years, but hadn’t seen him for a hot minute. Ironically enough, I saw him last week at Santos and asked him what was going on in his flourishing career. I’ve been slipping on my Hip-Hop game, because apparently he’s the next big thing.  Other than knowing that he’s a genuinely nice guy, with an amazing memory, the last thing I really knew about his music was his Justin Timberlake, Sexy Back remix and his fun single Fly Shit.

I got a chance to check out his new stuff, and I must say all the buzz is warranted!  I’m hyper-critical of Hip-Hop these days, and he’s nice (and I’m not saying this because I know him).  He has a vibe that just might be necessary for the music game right now, and the canter of his flow is refreshing.   There’s a small excerpt from his song Lately in that Tone video.

Look out for The Kid Daytona!

I haven’t written a blurb about the Album of the Week in two weeks.  This is because for the last two weeks Sade’s Solider of Love has been posted as the pick.  I wanted to gush and have amazing things to say about Solider of Love, and while it definitely wasn’t a bad album, I found that most things that I had to say about it were negative.  Since I’m a Sade fanatic (I guess not to the point of never finding fault), I decided not to write anything bad about the album. I will say though, Moon and the Sky, Morning Bird, and the album titled track Solider of Love are beautiful songs.

Sade’s newest effort left me a bit somber; to snap out of it I spent some time listening to Beach House’s new album, Team Dream.  The album didn’t quite get me out of my somber state, but the duo created a very mellow but rhythmic, dreamy vibe, that I really loved.  When you get a chance, check out the Baltimore natives, they are listed as last week’s Album of the Week here.

I was listening to my favorite radio station here in NYC, RXP 101.9, and they played Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by Green Day. It’s one of my favorite acoustic songs, and it just made me nostalgic for 90’s Alterative bands; great times.  That’s why for this week I decided to go West, and pick one of my all-time favorite bands, Red Hot Chili Peppers, their album Californication, is one of my favorites.  The album holds 5 songs by the L.A. based band that I love, most notably Scar Tissue, as well as Otherside, Californication, Porcelain, and Road Trippin’. If the album had Soul to Squeeze, and even commercially popular Under the Bridge and Give it Away Now, I’d probably lose my mind, but then again it would lose some of the Rock-Rap vibe that is synonymous with RHCP. Take a listen.

Below is the video for Scar Tissue, it’s quite possibly my favorite music video. It completely encapsulates the vibe of the song, and I just want to go out and wander with the sun basking on my face!

For those in Dallas for NBA All-Star weekend, I’m going to let you in on the places to be, to actually have fun!  If you’ve every gone to the annual event, many of these parties are headlined with athletes and then predominantly stuffed with people who will pay a pretty penny to be around them.  But they’re in some special VIP, that very few can get to, so it ends being an event with a lot of random people looking around and not really partying or the events are filled with girls trying to get to the athletes, and guys pretending or proving that they have clout, to compensate for not being an athlete.  Not really my definition of fun, but hey I guess it’s something to experience at least once; I need cool people and an amazing DJ to have fun.

The great thing about this year’s All-Star Weekend, is that it’s right around the corner of Texas native, Erykah Badu’s, album release, and she’s have a big bash with Jamie Foxx to celebrate.  Also Common’s performing on Sunday at Ghostbar.  I’m always an advocate of good music being part of the formula of any weekend outing.

If you want a party with music lovers, artists/industry folk, people who actually like to have a good ‘ol time…and yes athletes, then head to some of the spots DJ Dummy is spinning.  On Saturday in the day, right before the Slam Dunk Contest, he’ll be rockin’ Kenichi (that’s the flier above).

Sunday it’s all about 944 Magazine, who has one of the most talked about parties of the weekend (check out their list of events).

Dummy will be spinning 944’s game viewing party at Boardroom, and then will be shutting things down with the Common show and after party at Ghostbar.

Oh and Dj Dummy’s has just been added to the sexy Venus vs. Mars party, along with DJ Eque Saturday night at Victory Tavern.  You can check the video invite HERE.

It’s going to be a fun weekend Dallas! Enjoy!

If there’s a NYC social event that I’ve been meaning to go to over the years, it’s the Guggenheim’s First Fridays series. Today marks the end of this 5 year Art After Dark event, so I’m going!  Partying the night away, enjoying art and drinks in the beautifully sinuous environment, while having my brain tickled by creative minds, sounds like a psychedelic time.  Even more enticing for the grand finale, is that Chromeo is DJing the event!!! You may remember I was raving about them in December and had their album Fancy Footwork as the Album of the Week.  It’s going to be a great time! Dancing in a museum seems so wrong, but it’s fun to be naughty sometimes.

A new series will start later this year.  For more information about First Fridays or the Guggenheim, click here.

If you’re going let me know or say hi!

the art of music-telling…

What would be something good to listen to during my week of insanity? Apparently whatever the answer is, it has to be old-school.  Maybe nostalgia keeps me level-headed, i don’t know… At first I thought Madonna’s Immaculate Collection was going to be the vibe for the week, because I was still motivated by danceable music, like last week’s pick.  But no, after Skew it on the Bar-B came on, on three separate occasions, and laughing at how crazy Raekwon is (what the hell is he talking about on that track?), Outkast’s Aquemini was calling me.

With upbeat songs like the previously mentioned, Skew it on the Bar-B and Rosa Parks and heady tracks, like my absolute favorites The Art of Storytelling and West Savannah, the album takes me on a remarkable evocative ride. The lyrics put me in a good mood, the synthesizers heard throughout the album makes me upbeat & motivated, yet there’s a compelling mellowness that keeps me relaxed and focused.  Aquemini is one of favorite albums of all times, so I can go on and on.  Do you agree?

Take a listen, and see if you do or just reminisce on a great Hip-Hop album.

I want to go from nostalgic to current;  since I went down South this week, I’ll keep it going with New Orleans native, Jay Electronica.  His single Exhibit C, was leaked awhile ago but I just got my ears onto it.  I think it’s a great blend of N.O. meets NYC, plus my new 2nd favorite DJ, Just Blaze (remember I mentioned that in my Style Diary, Week 5) produced it.  Take a listen below.

There’s a secret location in Brooklyn. Well, not exactly a secret, but an undisclosed cathedral caged door that opens into a divinely lit dancing sanctuary.  Finding this treasure is far from hard, but to add to its ambiance there’s no sign on the door, so I tell you, it’s called Deity.

On the border of Downtown Brooklyn and Cobble Hill, this 2 story gem is worth the trip because it holds the sounds of some of the best DJs in the world.  This weekend in particular, DJ Dummy rocks the Underground; I really can’t wait!

Dummy truly understands how to communicate ‘have a good time’ to any crowd.  And have a good time I will! No pretentious clubs, two-stepping & profiling to choppy DJ transitions, but instead just really dancing and vibing out; remembering what good Hip-Hop and music in general sounds like. It’s a perfect way to warm up on a cold night, no fuss. It’s an experience that leaves a smile on your face.

Come out and experience a DJ Dummy party.  Saturday. Deity. Brooklyn. Don’t say i didn’t tell you…
